Wednesday, June 25,
2003 Mr. Smith was born in Clarence, on May 13, 1927, the son of
Elbert W. and Ada Pearl Walkup Smith. On June 25, 1949, he was united in
marriage to Gwendolyn Kelly in Storm Lake, Iowa. She survives. Bob is also
survived by three sons: Kelly Smith, and his wife, Peggy, of Jefferson
City, Jeff Smith and his wife, Cyndi, of Roanoke, VA, and Roger Smith and
his wife, Rhonda, of Macon; seven grandchildren, Meade Smith, Megan Smith,
Schuyler Smith, Leslie Smith, Jeff Smith, Jr., Grant Smith and Grace
Smith; and one sister, Myra Overfelt of Chesterfield. In addition to his
parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Cecil Smith and Max
Smith.
Mr. Smith was a member of the Clarence Christian Church. He
enjoyed working with the Clarence Baseball Association and was involved in
the building of the baseball fields at the Clarence City Lake in the
1960's. Bob enjoyed friends at the Clarence Senior Citizens Center and the
Walkersville Mill Club.
Bob graduated from Clarence High School in 1945. Mr. Smith
played baseball for the University of Missouri for three years and
lettered as a left-handed pitcher. He played professional baseball for
thirteen years, primarily in the Boston Red Sox organization and also with
the Cleveland Indians and Chicago Cubs. Bob was a successful
agri-businessman.
He and Gwen Owned and operated Bob Smith Feed lot Systems in
Clarence from 1969 to 1999 and farmed south of Clarence since 1953. He
will be missed by those who knew and loved him.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, June 25, 2003,
at the Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home in Clarence. Funeral services
will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 26, 2003, at the Greening-Eagan-Hayes
Chapel in Clarence, MO, with the Pastors Robert L. Price and Hugh DelCamp
officiating.
Burial will follow in the Union Cemetery, south of Clarence.
Memorials may be made to Union Cemetery Association, Clarence Baseball
Association or the charity of the donor's
