Fred F. Marsh, 82,
of Hereford Road, Corry, died Friday, October 27, 2006 at the Corry
Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Marsh was born January 5, 1924 in Valley Falls, Kan., son of the
late James E. and Searcy Johnson Marsh. Mr. Marsh had moved to Chicago,
Ill. when he was four years old and was educated there. He graduated
from Steinmetz High School in 1941.
Following graduation, he was drafted by the Chicago Cubs baseball team.
He then joined the U.S. Navy during World War II and served in Sicily,
Italy.
After his discharge in 1945, he returned home and was a utility baseball
player for the Cleveland Indians and later for the St. Louis Browns.
Mr. Marshs career also included playing with the Chicago White
Sox and the Baltimore Orioles. He retired from baseball in 1957.
Following his retirement, he started employment with the United States
Postal Service as a postal carrier. In 1984, Mr. Marsh retired from
the postal service.
He was a very faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Corry and
had been a member since 1956. Mr. Marsh was inducted into the Corry
Sports Hall of Fame and was the recipient of the 2006 Gertrude Barber
Sportsman of the Year award.
Mr. Marsh was an avid reader and sportsman. He especially enjoyed spending
time with his family and friends. In addition to his parents, he was
preceded in death by a son, Kenneth J. Marsh. He is survived by his
wife, Lillian M. Bennett Marsh whom he married September 29, 1945 in
Newport, Rhode Island. Also surviving are three daughters, Candace Savko
and her husband, Robert of Waterford, Lynnette McMeekan of Cassopolis,
Mich. and Lavonne Steves and her husband, Richard of Corry; a sister,
Emalyne Molzahn of Garden Grove, Calif.; also by many grandchildren,
great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Bracken Funeral Home,
315 N. Center Street, Corry and on Monday from 10 until the time of
a memorial service at 11 a.m. at the Christian & Missionary Alliance
Church, 721 Hatch Street, Corry. The Rev. Ralph McGill of the Miracle
Mountain Ranch will officiate.
