David Floyd Weaver, 67, of Powderly went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, Nov. 17, 2008.

Funeral services are set for 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Fortenberry officiating. Interment follows in Long Cemetery.

The family receives friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

He was born May 12, 1941, in Ben Franklin, the son of the late Floyd Weaver Sr. and Christine Weaver. He was a graduate of Pecan Gap High School and attended Paris Junior College where he was Academic All American in Baseball and Basketball and continues to hold the NJCAA record for the most strike outs in one baseball game.

He served in the U.S. Army, receiving his basic training at Fort Knox. Fulfilling his lifelong dream he signed with the Cleveland Indians organization in 1961. He played professional baseball for 13 years with three years in the major league with the Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox and the Milwaukee Brewers. After leaving pro-ball, he worked 23 years until his retirement at B&W/McDermott/Turner Pipe as an X-ray technician. During this time he completed his Bachelor of Science degree at East Texas State University.

On Oct. 18, 1968, he married Betty Conder of Powderly and recently celebrated 40 years of marriage. He was a devoted husband, loving father and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was an active member of East Paris Baptist Church for more than 20 years, serving as deacon, Sunday school teacher and a member of the celebration choir. He was an avid sports fan, PJC supporter and a member of its Athletic Hall of Fame. At retirement he enjoyed reading, fishing, long walks, going to sporting events, gospel music concerts and attending the men’s 2:22 Bible study. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him

He is preceded in death by his parents, David Floyd Weaver Sr. and Christine Bush Weaver; and a brother, Gene Weaver.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Betty Weaver; children, Cindy Christian and husband, Charles, of Richardson, Greg Weaver and wife, Wendy, of Murphy; grandchildren, Caroline and Caleb Christian, Cody and Chloe Weaver; sisters, Zoc Irwin, Marjorie Bettis and Kay Heath; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Serving as pallbearers are Bill Clark, Dalton Hodnett, Marion Parker, Jim Preston, Bill Scudder and Dickie Towers.
