ST. LOUIS (AP) - Jim Toomey, a longtime executive for the St. Louis Cardinals, died of brain cancer at age 84. Toomey, a former assistant
general manager and public relations director for the team, died Sunday,
eight months after being diagnosed with the disease.
He started his career as a
sportswriter with the old St. Louis Star-Times in 1937 and spent 38 years
in the Cardinals' front office before retiring in 1987. He stayed on as a
team consultant until 1994 and served as an official scorer through 2000.
Following Toomey's retirement,
the Cardinals renamed the Busch Stadium press box in his honor.
