WHITE ROCK, S.C. -- Johnny Temple , a five-time All-Star who was part of baseball's first interleague trade, died Sunday night after battling cancer. He was 66.

   He had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in September, his son, Mike, said.

   Temple played for the Houston Colt .45s (predecessor to the Astros) in 1963-64 and was a Houston sportscaster after his retirement.

   A lifetime .284 hitter, Temple played second base and batted leadoff for the Cincinnati Reds from 1952-59.

   His last year with the Reds was his best, when he hit .311, scored 102 runs and drove in 67.

   Before the 1960 season, Temple was traded to the Cleveland Indians for Billy Martin and Cal McLish, the first time a trade was made between National and American League teams.

   Temple hit .264 with seven stolen bases and 17 RBIs in 100 games with Houston in 1963.
