Andy Spognardi Dead
Ball Player Turned Doctor BOSTON (AP) Andrew E. Spognardi, a family doctor who gave up a career with the Boston Red Sox to practice medicine, died Jan. 1. He was 91. Spognardi signed with the Red Sox for the 1932 season, the height of the Great Depression. He played second base and had a respectable batting average of .294 in 34 at bats over 17 games. During his brief stay in the majors, he played against Hall Of Fame legends like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmy Foxx and Al Simmons. But the next year, he cut short his career and decided to attend Tufts Medical School rather than return to the team. He retired in 1988. Services will be private. |
