MLB player, scout Stan Benjamin, 95, of Framingham dies Stan Benjamin, who excelled at Framingham High School and later played in the major leagues before beginning a scouting career, died early today on Cape Cod at age 95. After playing baseball at Framingham High and Western Maryland, Benjamin reached the major leagues as an outfielder with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1939. He played from 1939-42 with the Phillies. He returned to the major leagues in 1945 with the Cleveland Indians. In 241 major league games, Benjamin batted .229 hit five home runs and drove in 41 runs. Benjamin later served as the baseball coach at Greenfield High School for several years. In 1965, Benjamin joined the Houston Astros as a scout. He remained with the Astros for nearly 40 years. He scouted American League East clubs for several seasons before becoming the team's scouting supervisor for the Northeast. Benjamin was a frequent visitor to Fenway Park during the baseball season. Astros president Tal Smith, who was born in Framingham, called Benjamin a ``vital cog'' in the organization and a ``keen judge of talent.'' Funeral arrangements have yet to be made. |
