Red Sox Traveling Secretary Dies at 87

BOSTON (AP) - Jack Rogers, the longtime Boston Red Sox traveling secretary, died at 87.

His death Saturday was confirmed by the team Monday.

Rogers held his job with the Red Sox from 1969-1991. He was responsible for arranging hotel rooms and transportation for players, coaches and their families.

``He was one of the last of the old-type traveling secretaries who did so much for so many people,'' Red Sox vice president Dick Bresciani said.

After his retirement, Rogers remained a fixture at spring training. Through last season, he charted pitches in the press box.

Born in Somerville, Rogers attended Boston College and was a Navy pilot on an aircraft carrier during World War II. He worked in public relations for the Boston Braves, before the National League team moved to Milwaukee, and Pan American World Airways.

He is survived by wife Ellie and a son and daughter.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday in Boston.
