James Paulus "Runt" Outlaw, a native of Orme, Tenn., and longtime resident of Jackson, died Sunday at an area hospital. He was 93.

Outlaw attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute, now Auburn University, in 1933, where he played baseball, and later went on to play professionally for the Cincinnati Reds (1937-38) and the Boston Bees (1939), now the Atlanta Braves. He also played third base for the Detroit Tigers (1943-49) during their 1945 World Series win. He was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1990.

After his professional baseball career, Outlaw worked for the Dairy Fresh Milk Co. in Jackson. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Jackson Civitan Club.

Survivors include a son, Perry Outlaw of Fairhope; two brothers, Curtis Dan Outlaw and Bert Cornell Outlaw; and a sister, Edith Outlaw, all of Jackson; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 1 p.m. until the 3 p.m. funeral at First United Methodist Church in Jackson. Burial will be in Trinity Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Jackson. Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson is handling arrangements.
