Joseph P. Ostrowski, 86, of Tripp
Street, West Wyoming, died Friday at the Wilkes-Barre General
Hospital.
Born Nov. 15, 1916, in West Wyoming,
he was a son of the late Martin and helena (Cegelka) Ostrowski. He
was a 1934 graduate of West Wyoming High School and received a bachelor of
arts degree in 1938 from the University of Scranton. He was a U.S.
Army Air Force veteran of World War II, serving as a medic in Italy.
He was employed as a teacher by the West Wyoming and Wyoming Area school
districts. He played professional baseball for the Boston Red Sox,
the St. Louis Browns and the New York Yankees, with whom he won three
pennants and three world series. He later played for the Los Angeles
angels in the Pacific Coast League and was inducted into the Pennsylvania
Sports Hall of Fame in 1988. He played C&D teams in the Eastern
Shore and Mid-Atlantic Leagues. He was a member of the West Wyoming
Hose Co. 1, American Legion Post 9040, Wyoming, the Fraternal Order of
Eagles, 1965, the New York Yankees Alumni Association, the Major League
Baseball Players Alumni Association and the Pennsylvania State Educators
Association. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church,
Wyoming.
He was preceded in death by brothers,
Martin, Edward and Casimer; and sisters Helen Forrest, Sophie Falshek,
Viola Anderson and Victoria Darasavage.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years,
the former Helen Augustynowicz; sons, Paul, Houston; William, Exeter;
Joseph, State College; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren;
brother John, Pittston; sisters, Francis Gayewski, Clark, N.J.; and
Genevieve Karwoski, Stamford, Conn.
Funeral services will beat 8:30 a.m.
Monday from the Bednarski Funeral Home, 168 Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, with a
Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church. Interment
will be in the parish cemetary, West Wyoming.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m.
