James Lorin "Nellie" Nelson

The Sacramento Bee, August 23rd, 2004

NELSON, James Lorin
''Nellie''
Was born July 4, 1947. He died on Sunday, August 22, 2004, in Sacramento at the age of 57.

A much devoted husband, Jim leaves behind his dearest and beloved wife of 8 years, Barbara Sidhu Nelson.

Jim, a native of Alabama, was the son of the late Frank L. Nelson, and Betty Adair. He is survived by brother Harold Nelson and sister Dorothy Ann Withey. Endeared son-in-law of the late Louis A. Sidhu, he is also survived by his mother-in-law Theresa H. Sidhu; his sisters-in-law Carol Jean Sidhu, Susan Teri Manuel, and Rose Marie Mamac. "Uncle Jim" to nieces and nephews Christine Marie, Elizabeth, Bradley, Jay, Johnny, and Harold, Jr.

He was a longtime friend of Ron King (wife Betty) and Dan Mirsky (wife Holly). Mr. King was instrumental in Jim's being drafted as a pitcher by the Pittsburg Pirates baseball team in 1965. That association grew, as did his friendship with Mr. Mirsky, a coemployee at Produce Express, where Jim at his death had been employed in sales since the founding of that company nearly 20 years ago.

Jim served his country in the United States Marine Corps Reserves. He was a member and benefactor of the Professional Baseball Players Association of America, and a supporter of the Sacramento Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Association. Among those who will also sorely miss Jim are his dogs, "the girls," Lucy, Sophie and Annie, and their brother tomcat, "Coty."

Jim was a quiet and humble man. A silent devotee to the homeless, Jim took joy in handing out $5 dollar bills every year at Christmas time. This year and every year hereafter Christmas will never be the same without Jim. We love you, Jim. Goodbye, until we meet again.
