VIRGINIA BEACH -- Frances Davis Metheny and Arthur Beauregard ``Bud'' Metheny died Jan. 2, 2003 in Virginia Beach.

Frances was born in Norfolk and Arthur in St. Louis, Mo. They were married Feb. 14, 1942. Mrs. Metheny was a graduate of William and Mary, Class of 1939. She was a retired teacher and librarian with Norfolk public schools. She was a Girl Scout leader for over 10 years with Troop 323 for the same girls from the age of 7 to 18. She was a trainer for the Girl Scout round up in Vermont and led camps at Camp Apasus in Norfolk.

Mr. Metheny was a graduate of William and Mary, receiving a B.S. degree in 1940 and a masters in 1953. He was a member of the World Champion New York Yankees in 1943, having been the last player to wear the number 3 (Babe Ruth's number) before it was retired. He was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and the American Association of College Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame. Mr. Metheny was a member of the Tidewater Baseball Shrine. He was also inducted into the William and Mary Hall of Fame and the ODU Hall of Fame where he taught and coached for 32 years. He was Professor Emeritus and was in the Order of the White Jackets at William and Mary. Mr. and Mrs. Metheny were members of St. John's the Apostle Catholic Church in Virginia Beach where Mrs. Metheny was a member of the Altar Guild.

Survivors include their children, Eileen Carlton and her husband John and John Metheny and his wife Lynn; three grandchildren, Laura Carlton, Beau Metheny and Jeremy Metheny; and a niece, Peggy Fitzgerald. They were preceded in death by a grandson, Sean Carlton.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at St. John's the Apostle Catholic Church in Sandbridge. Burial will be at Colonial Grove Memorial Park in Virginia Beach. The family will receive friends at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.
