CORYDON, Ind. (AP) -- Merrill ''Pinky'' May, who played third base for the Philadelphia Phillies for five seasons and was the father of former major league catcher Milt May, died Monday. He was 89.

     May signed with the New York Yankees in 1932 out of Indiana University. He played for the Phillies from 1939 to 1943, then joined the Navy to fight in World War II.

     After the war, May, who had a career batting average of .275 and hit four home runs, became a minor league manager. Future Cincinnati stars Johnny Bench and Hal McRae were among the players he managed.

     Milt May had a 15-year career in the majors as a catcher, including a game-winning pinch-hit for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1971 World Series.
