Former AL umpire Maloney dies July 31, 2003
The National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues said Wednesday that Maloney was stricken and died Tuesday in Barstow. No further details were made available. Maloney had been serving as an area observer for the Professional Baseball Umpire Corp. since its inception in 1997. Maloney umpired in the AL from 1969-84, working the 1975 World Series, three league championship series and three All-Star Games. Before that, he worked in the minor leagues from 1952-69. From 1986-93, he served as commissioner of the South Florida College Baseball Umpire Association. Maloney is survived by his wife, Beverly; a brother, Thomas; two stepsons; a stepdaughter; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Plans for memorial services were incomplete. |
