PORTLAND, Ore. — Ad Liska, who went from teaching school in Nebraska to pitching in the major leagues, died Dec. 1 in hospice care at age 92. Liska spent three seasons pitching for the Washington Senators of the American League, starting in 1929, and two seasons for the Philadelphia Phillies, compiling a record of 17-18. He spent a short time teaching in rural Nebraska schools and playing semipro baseball, and then became a pro in 1927 when he signed with Burlington, Iowa, of the old Three I League. Liska had an appendectomy about three years ago, then two weeks later suffered a stroke. He is survived by two daughters and four grandchildren. |
