Major Leaguer Hubert 'Max' Lanier of Denton dies at 91

Hubert "Max" Lanier, a former pitcher with the St. Louis Cardinals who was born in Denton, died Tuesday at the age of 91 in Dunnellon, Fla.

Lanier had a 162-game average of 13 wins and 10 losses in his 14-year career with a 3.01 ERA. He was 2-1 with a 1.71 ERA in seven World Series starts with St. Louis from 1942-44.

Lanier pitched 12 seasons with the Cardinals. He also played with the New York Giants and St. Louis Browns and later managed in the minor leagues.

Lanier's son, Hal, was the N.L. Manager of the Year in 1986 with the Astros.
