William Joseph Klaus Sr., 77, Sarasota, died Dec. 3, 2006.

He was born Dec. 9, 1928, in Spring Grove, Ill., and came to Sarasota in 1955 from Fox Lake, Ill. He was a major league baseball player with the Boston Red Sox and other teams and was a member of the Major League Baseball Alumni Association. He was a member of Banner Elk Christian Fellowship Church in North Carolina.

Survivors include daughters Donna Burkhart of Sarasota and Nancy Drake of Winston-Salem, N.C.; sons Dale of Vero Beach and Joe of Navarre; sisters June Frost of Ingleside, Ill., and Mary A. Daudelin of Bartlett, Ill.; a brother, Robert of San Diego; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A celebration of his life will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at his home. Hawkins Funeral Home handled arrangements.
