Former D-Backs coach Tommy Jones dies

Tommy Jones, one of the original members of the Diamondbacks' front office and a first-base coach for the club for part of the 2004 season,
died Thursday night in Phoenix. Jones, 54, had battled brain cancer since 2007.

A former minor-league player and manager, Jones was the Diamondbacks' director of player development from 1998-2004. He served as director ofbaseball operations for the Arizona Fall League last season.

"He was a high-energy guy that truly was passionate about baseball," said Steve Cobb, the fall league's executive director. "His enthusiasm was infectious."

While with the Diamondbacks, Jones was known for building strong relationships with everyone he worked with, including players.

"He was a really inclusive, energetic guy," former Diamondbacks General Manager Joe Garagiola Jr. said. "I don't know if he knew the term 'management by walking around,' but that was how he ran the farm department. He was a tremendous, tremendous asset for me."

Jones is survived by his daughter Sarah, son Tyler and mother Louise.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Jan. 31 at Highlands Church, 9050 E. Pinnacle Peak, Scottsdale.
