MAPLE SHADE, N.J. (AP) - Frank J. Hoerst Jr., a former Phillies pitcher and star basketball player at LaSalle College, has died. He was 82.

  Hoerst died Friday at the Rosewood Nursing Home.

  A left-handed pitcher, Hoerst played for the Phillies during the 1940s, before and after serving in the Navy as a gunnery officer.   He was 10-33 with a 5.17 ERA 41 starts and 57 relief appearances over five seasons, throwing eight complete games.

In the 1930s, Hoerst was a standout basketball player at LaSalle, serving as the team's captain and as its highest scorer. He was later inducted into the LaSalle Hall of Athletes.

  Hoerst became LaSalle's baseball coach in 1950, compiling a career record of 44-34-1.

  Hoerst retired in 1990 from Vermiculite LTD, a New Jersey company he co-founded and headed which distributed the substance used in gardening and construction.

  Hoerst is survived by his wife, Helen Larkin Meehan Hoerst; a son, Frank J. Hoerst III; two stepsons, Patrick Meehan and Frank J. Meehan; a daughter; Judith A. Schaeffe; a stepdaughter, Carol Meehan Sweeney; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
