John J Hayes died at his home 207 6th yesterday of gastritis. "Jack" as he was better known was born in the old fourteenth ward on North 9th Street in 1860. He attended Public School #2. After leaving school he took to playing baseball and became a professional. John Hayes played behind the bat in turns for the Brooklyn, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Louisville Clubs. He also played third base for the famous Worcesters , the Champions of 1880.

He was well known and popular in Baseball Circles as far as California where he also played for 2 years. John left the diamond in 1893 after the death of his wife, to whom he was very much devoted.

He then became associated with the firm of Valentine and Company Paint Manufacturers of Brooklyn where he remained up to the time of his demise. He is survived by 2 daughters. The funeral will take place from his late residence on Friday at 2 o'clock and internment will be in the family plot in Calvery Cemetery.
