FORMER MAJOR LEAGUE PITCHER WARREN HACKER DIES

Former major league pitcher Warren Louis Hacker, 77, died at his home in Lenzburg in St. Clair County, on Wednesday (May 22, 2002).
Hacker, uncle of former Cardinals coach Rich Hacker, was born Nov. 21, 1924 in Marissa.

Hacker pitched for 12 years in the major leagues, primarily with the Chicago Cubs, and had a career record of 62-89 with a 4.21
earned-run average.

Hacker was a World War II veteran, serving three years in the Marine Corps.
           
He is survived by his wife, Olinda. He married her in 1946 in Pampa, Texas, at home plate in the Pampa Oilers baseball park, where he began his professional baseball career.

Hacker, who was preceded in death by five brothers and five sisters, is also survived by a
daughter, Pamela Sutton of Silverthorne, Colo.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Peter's United Church of Christ, the American Cancer Society or a charity of the
donor's choice.
           
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today and 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Heil-Schuessler Funeral Home in New Athens. A VFW service will be held at 6:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
