MCFARLAND - McFarland resident Albert Paul Epperly who lived with his daughter, Sharon Vancil, passed away on Monday, April 14, 2003, in McFarland. A memorial service for Al, age 84, will be on Saturday, April 19, 2003, at 3 p.m. at FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, Davenport, Iowa. Al's 17-year professional baseball career included pitching for the Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Seals, Milwaukee Brewers, Brooklyn Dodgers, Montreal Royals, St. Paul Saints and he played winter ball for two years in Havana Cuba. He was a member of the 1938 Chicago Cubs team when they played the New York Yankees in the World Series. In 1954, Al began his 30-year career with the Scott County, Iowa, sheriff's office. In February 2002, Al was very proud to be inducted into the Iowa 2002 Baseball Hall of Fame in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Al felt very special to have so many close neighborhood friends, enjoyed watching his bowling buddies get those strikes, and throwing his line in the back waters several blocks away. Vivian, his loving wife of 63 years, preceded him in death. Survivors include his daughters and son-in-law, Sharon Vancil and Sandy and Tom Koenig; his grandchildren and their spouses, Chris and Melodi Koenig and Heidi and Brian Corrigan; his great-grandchildren, Tommy and Ricky; his brother-in-law and wife, Paul and Caryle Gibson; his sister-in-law, Grace Epperly; and his very special nieces and nephews.
