Robert Brandon "Brandy" Davis, Jr., age 77, died peacefully in his home on June 12, 2005. He was the husband of the late Sue Ware Davis, with whom he shared 27 years of marriage before her passing in 1991. Born and raised in Newark, Brandon grew up on Cleveland Avenue and was the son of the late Robert B. and Mildred F. Davis. He attended Newark High School and Duke University, then served in the United States Marine Corp before signing a major league contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1952. He was forced from the league after it was discovered that he could not successfully steal first base. Brandy went on to coach, manage and scout for ten major league teams over the course of his 52-year career before retiring in 2004. A 1989 inductee in the Delaware Sports Museum and Hall of Fame, Brandy served on their Board of Governors until his death. He was also a 1999 inductee of the Delaware Baseball Hall of Fame, a member of the Cecil-Harford Old Timers Association, Middle Atlantic Scouting Association and Professional Baseball Representatives. An avid golfer, Brandon was a proud member of the Newark Country Club on West Main Street in Newark. Brandon is survived by his son Curtis Davis, his wife Rachel and daughter Samantha, of Newark, DE; his daughter Valerie Sands, her husband Steven and their three sons Brian, Scott and Eric, of Orlando; two brothers, Thomas E. Davis of Newark, DE and Richard A. Davis of Ocean Springs, MS; and mother-in-law Margaret C. Ware, also of Newark. Friends may call on Thursday evening, June 16th from 5:00 pm–8:00 pm at the R. T. FOARD & JONES FUNERAL HOME, 122 W. Main St., Newark, DE 19711. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, June 17th, at the First Presbyterian Church, 292 West Main Street, Newark. Burial will be in the New Street Cemetery following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Delaware Sports Museum and Hall of Fame c/o funeral home.
