Joe Buzas, owner of the Salt Lake Stingers minor-league baseball club,
died at age 84 yesterday.
An announcement from the Pacific Coast League says Buzas had been fighting illness for several years. Buzas spent most of his life in baseball. He got his start with the New York Yankees in 1945 and played 30 games in the majors. Most of his career was spent as an owner or manager. He brought a Pacific Coast League team from Portland, Oregon to Salt Lake City in 1994. The team was known as the Buzz and was the triple-A franchise for the Minnesota Twins. The team changed its name to the Stingers in 2000 and became the triple-A franchise for the world-champion Anaheim Angels. A funeral mass will be held at St. Vincent's Catholic Church in Salt Lake City on Monday. |
