Mr. Mace S. Brown, 92, died
Sunday, March 24, 2002, at his home.
The funeral will be held at 1
p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at Grace United Methodist Church, where he
was a member. Burial will follow in Westminster Gardens.
A native of North English, Iowa,
Mace was the youngest of five children to the late Gary and Justine Brown.
He attended the University of Iowa. In 1930, Mr. Brown was signed to the
St. Louis Cardinals as a relief pitcher. He was an active Major League
Baseball relief pitcher for 12 years for the Cardinals, the Pittsburgh
Pirates, the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Boston Red Sox. Mace was the first
full time relief pitcher in the major leagues to make the All-Star Team.
He retired in 1989 from the Boston Red Sox after 46 years as a player,
scout and coach. Mr. Brown was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy serving
during World War II, in the Pacific Theatre.
He was preceded in death by his
wife of 69 years, Sue Vaughn Talley Brown.
He is survived by his son and
daughter-in-law, Al and Midge Brown of Belhaven; daughter, Carolyn
McKinney of the home, five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and
special canine companion, Frenzi.
The family would like to
acknowledge the love and support he received from his sister-in-law,
Nelsie T. Lowdermilk of Greensboro and special thanks to Dr. Michael B.
Wert, the nurses and staff of the sub-acute unit (4500) of Moses Cone
Hospital and the team of Advance Home Health Care, Debbie Wells, Marti
Carter and Clara Mapp.
