News (Denver) Saturday, 29 December 1888 ASA BRAINARD DEAD A Well-Known Citizen Expires After a Brief Illness After an illness of only three days, Asa Brainard, the well-known and popular superintendent of the Markham hotel billiard room, succombed to a fierce to attack of acute pneumonia. Born in Brooklyn in 1841, the deceased has held many important positions in the various government departments. Two years ago he came to Denver and has since been employed at the Markham. Ever upright, manly and honorable, Mr. Brainard soon endeared himself to a large circle of friends, and in a quiet, unassuming manner peculiar to himself he secured the lasting esteem of all with whom he came in contact. From an early age the deceased was intimately connected with outdoor athletics and during the period of championship held by the Cincinnati Red Stockings Asa was the pitcher for that club. The news of his death was received with very general expressions of sorrow, and especially among the votaries of the cue has his decease cast a gloom. Mr. Brainard was a son-in-law of Henry F. Vaille, late president of the National Bank of Commerce, New York city. The remains have been telegraphed for and will be forwarded to that city. |
