Monty Basgall The Sierra Vistat
Herald Feb. 8, 1922 - Sept. 22, 2005 Monty Basgall, 83, of Sierra Vista, Ariz., passed away on Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005. He had been a resident of Sierra Vista for the past 28 years. Monty was born Feb. 8, 1922, in Pfeifer, Kan., to Jacob and Anna Basgall. He grew up in Pfeifer playing youth baseball. Monty originally signed with the Dodgers in 1942 playing on a "D" team in Georgia. He left baseball to join the U.S. Army Air Corp in special services. When Monty left the military, he quickly rejoined baseball. After playing for a AA team in Texas, he became the second baseman for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He played only 200 games in the Major Leagues, all for the Pirates, between 1948 and 1951. Throughout his 46 years in baseball, Monty has managed, coached and scouted for the Dodgers organization for 27 years. He won his first World Championship in 1981 as a coach under manager, Tommy Lasorda. Monty retired in 1986 and moved to Sierra Vista full time, where he spent his leisure time on the golf course. Monty is survived by his wife of 63 years, Juanita Basgall of Sierra Vista; son, David Craig Basgall and his wife Trudy of Sierra Vista; two grandchildren: Christine Basgall of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Michael Basgall of Torrance, Calif. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2005, at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church, 800 N. Taylor Drive, with Father Gregory Adolf officiating. Interment will be at the Mother Teresa Columbarium, 1425 Yaqui, in Sierra Vista. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of Monty, be made to St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church Building Fund, 800 N. Taylor Drive, Sierra Vista AZ 85635.
