DODGE CITY — Hubert C. "Tuny" Andrews, 89, died March 11, 2012, at Presbyterian Manor of the Plains in Dodge City.

He was born on August 31, 1922, in Burbank, Oklahoma, the son of Herbert and Lois (Whitwell) Andrews.

Hubert graduated from Ponca City Oklahoma High School and attended Independence Community College in 1941 and 1946. He served three years in the United States Army Air Force from 1942 to 1945. On December 23, 1942, he married Margery L. Cheney in Sherman, Texas. She preceded him in death on May 6, 1997. After their marriage, they lived in Independence until moving to Dodge City in 1964.

Mr. Andrews played professional baseball and was with the New York Giants in 1947 and 1948. In 1947, the Giants hit 221 home runs, a National League record. Team players were given rings honoring this event. He wore this ring for over sixty years. Mr. Andrews was employed by the Insurance Service Office for 35 years.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Dodge City, Major League Baseball Players Alumni and the Dodge City Country Club, where he was Men's Golf Champion for ten years and had seven "hole in ones" over his lifetime.

Mr. Andrews is survived by two sons, James C. Andrews and wife, Karen, of Chicago, Illinois, and Bret W. Andrews and wife, Laura, of Arlington, Texas; one daughter, Ruth Lynn Skaggs and husband, J. Milt, of Dodge City; four grandchildren, Todd Skaggs of Dodge City, Amy Staggs and husband, Michael, of Eastvale, California, Eric Andrews of Chicago, Illinois, and Nicholas Andrews of Arlington, Texas; and two great-grandchildren, Collin and Lauren Staggs of Eastvale, California.
In addition to his wife, "Tuny" was also preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 16, 2012, at Scroggins Memorial Mausoleum in Dodge City. There is no visitation, as cremation has taken place.
